Today I had to confront two students for cheating (one of them copied the other's homework, right down to the typos). Then, one of our department's brand-new cameras was stolen out of its box. I'm heartbroken to think it might be one of our newspaper students who did it, but the possibility is strong. We do share a common classroom space with another department so I'm trying to just side-eye the hell out of those students and maintain faith in mine. The capper, however, was having to sit through a faculty meeting that started with a presentation on how to integrate no-cost textbooks and materials and eventually disintegrated into a heated debate over what it means to redesign our classes with equity in mind. There's a new equity pilot program that will, I guess, see a committee visit classrooms to observe and make suggestions based on a set of criteria. In theory I think it's a fantastic, long overdue idea. In reality, however, its current iteration---which includes a six-page document filled with confusing lists and requirements--is poorly thought out and it didn't help that the group leader had us move our desks into a circle AND TAKE TURNS READING FROM THE DOCUMENT. So, naturally, this meant grown-ass adults talking to each other in shitty tones, interrupting and sighing. A woman next to me balked at reading from the document, elementary school style. "I resent being put into this circle and asked to read from this list; frankly it feels like performative masculinity and I find it condescending." Welcome to academia. 8:31 pm - 17.04.18
