----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise The Symbolism of the blackbird is mixed. Black, of course, usually signified death and evil, but the general symbolism for these birds connects them to everlasting life. As a result, the blackbird was sometimes considered symbolic of the struggle between good and evil, between body and soul. This bird is sometimes seen in paintings of the Mother and Child as a foreshadowing of the death of Christ. Italian peasant lore holds that blackbirds were once all white but one winter the weather turned so nasty and cold that these birds had to find warmth in the chimneys of the town and were colored black by the soot. They have remained black to this day. Even now, some old folks call the days of January 31 and February 1 blackbird days. --from The Folklore of Birds by Laura C. Martin. 1:12 pm - 01.24.02
