goodbye Sophie Buttercup

My cat Sophie Buttercup had many medical problems during her 16 years on this planet: An autoimmune disorder, kidney failure, a pacemaker, seizures, irritable bowel syndrome.

In the last few weeks she started to get weaker and sometimes disoriented.

11 days ago, we took her into the vet hospital and they did a bunch of tests but could find nothing conclusive so we / they decided that maybe her seizure medication dose was too high. We lowered it and for a couple of days she seemed a little bit better but she also had a cold which made her really uncomfortable.

In the last week and a half she had really good days and then some not so good days and then after spending a nice night with her Monday she took a really bad turn for the worse this at about 4 in the morning - falling and basically losing control of her bowels and legs. She also seemed to be in a lot of pain. A lot.

We took her to the emergency vet right away and they ran a lot of tests - they didn't learn much other than that her red blood cell count was low and kept dropping throughout the day. She had a very low temperature and had to be put on oxygen. An ultrasound showed an irregular thickening of the stomach lining - something that wasn't there only a week and a half ago. She also had a very pronounced heart murmur.

They tried to do a needle biopsy on the stomach lining it didn't show anything but more than anything they agreed that she seemed to be shutting down -and fast. She was weak, not social (which is so rare for her -- even the vet said something to us about that, about how she knew that Sophie was really really bad because she wasn't "talking" to her or wanting pets). She was also clearly in a lot of pain and when the doctors said they didn't have any answers, couldn't have any answers without doing an intrusive biopsy, we knew that the time had come. I asked our vet if she felt like she should try to talk us out of that decision and she said no.

We're really grateful we had one last good night with her. We also got to be with her at the end. I got to hold her and give her a kitty massage and kiss the back of her neck.

Right now that means everything to me.
