Things you learn about your biological mother in her final days:

She was a debutante. Really.

She and her husband never use the dining room or kitchen table unless they have guests--they just eat at the coffee table with trays, just like you do.

She took care of her father in his final days. He was diabetic and had lost part of a leg and for several months she lived with him as his caretaker.

She has named almost everything in her house. The coffee cup with the pig is called Miss Piggy. The fish-shaped bench is called Fish, of course. The white pillow that is stained pink with lipstick is called Quad for the way it looks like two wishbones attached at the heart. You wish that she would call it Wishbone.

She loves Mickey Mouse and has even been to Disneyland.

It's this bit that perhaps surprises you the most and brings cheer in the most surprising way.
