----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- smoke day Of course we got through it, we always do. Smoke day today. Classes canceled through the rest of the week. The fires are deadly and awful--deadliest in California history. They're about two hours north of here and the billowing smoke and ash collects in the valley here and everyone is wearing masks and getting headaches and it feels as though we've all just smoked a pack of cigarettes but it's tough to complain because up north it's so, so worse. Just awful. I'm glad they finally decided to close the campus. The other two colleges closed Tuesday (Monday was Veteran's Day) and when the chancellor of our district sent out an email yesterday around noon bemoaning his "tough decision" to stay open there was a furious and immediate backlash. Took about two hours for him to reverse that decision. Anyway, now I'm at home and trying to use this as an opportunity to catch up on work. The sky outside is yellow and even inside I can still smell the smoke. We need rain so dearly--some is predicted for Thanksgiving and that is truly something I'd be grateful for now. 10:25 am - 15.11.18
